Garrapata cliffs at sunset

Posted by Tracy (La Selva Beach, United States) on 21 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This was a rather hard-won image. I had to climb down a steep, narrow trail to the bottom of this ravine. It was April when I shot this, which is tick season. When I got to the bottom I checked my shirt- 5 ticks! Ugh!

I may not be able to respond to all comments, but I read and appreciate every one of them.

I am currently attending classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, in the Photography department.

I hope to someday make photography a full time profession.

Very nice shot. I like the rocks in the foreground (lots of character); the V-shape formed by the opening ravine; and the layered sky. I'd say it was worth a run-in with at least 6 ticks ... so it was a bargain.

@Rand: Thanks Rand! There is always a trade off to get something different! For me it is almost always ticks!

Christian from Gif-sur-Yvette, France

Great image!
The wide angle is very wisely used here to give us this beautiful foreground allowing to enter gently in the image.
Take care,
Christian

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Congratulations Tracy! This is a wonderful shot...even worth a few ticks..... Beautifully framed to lead the eye deep into the picture. I love it!!! ;-)

GJC from Kyoto (京都), Japan

Love the story almost as much as the image. 5 ticks. Hmm. Certainly doesn't look like it here, with such serenity as you give us a wonderful view into a widening sea. Thanks so much for doing all that for us!

@GJC: Thanks! This place is named Garrapata- which means "tick" in Spanish...

Lesley from Lincoln, United States

This is a stunning shot, Tracy. I love the water and rocks in the foreground. Very nice!

I hate ticks, but have been lucky to have never found one on myself, although we live in an area where they're pretty bad this time of year. It never would have occurred to me that they're a problem along the coast, too. Go figure!

21 Jun 2009 12:57pm

@Lesley: Hi Lesley, We have lots of ticks here, really any time of year but from January through May they seem to be really bad! Glad you've never found one :) Also, thanks for the nice comment about the photo!

Very funny. I opened your site and read the narrative.LOL. I just finished removing a wood tick from myself only a moment ago. They arer exceptionally bad here this year.
A strong dynamic image. Well done. Worth the effort and the ticks I must say.

Thanks, Lee! so sorry about the tick, though--they are rather gross. For some reason I always find ticks...just the other day after shooting the moon setting I was having breakfast, looked down, and there was a tick on my shirt, and he was moving! We were in a restaurant, so I grabbed him & made a quick escape to the restroom, where he was promptly flushed! :)
Enjoy the rest of your day! Tick free of course!
